A Brief History

The mission in Ghana, West Africa began in 1983 when Dr. John Oduro started the Faith Community Baptist Church, located just outside of Accra in a town called Medina.

Dr. Oduro attended Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary) in Philadelphia, PA for his Master of Divinity along with Rev. Harry L. Thomas (Class of 70). The two of them became life-long friends. Rev. Dr. John Mensah Oduro (Ashanti Tribe) was born and raised in Ghana. Although he has a Th.D and Ph.D. and he could have remained in the U.S., he went back to Ghana to pioneer a church and school and ultimately a University. When Rev. Thomas learned of the new work in Ghana in 1983, he presented it to the Board and it was decided to partner with the work in Ghana.

The first time Rev. Thomas traveled to Ghana, Dr. Oduro and his family were renting a literal hallway for his family. Church was on a porch and Sunday school was under a tree. Later, Come Alive sent a tent but it was destroyed in a wind storm. The next step was to get land and begin to build. Now when you go to Medina you will find a wonderful Church and the Faith Community Baptist Complex of Schools at Zongo Junction in Medina. Many of the buildings are named after Come Alive and related generous donors. Dr. Oduros home is called Medford House and the youth choir is called, The Come Alive Singers! The Church has over 800 in attendance and the school with over 1,500 attending.

God has opened the door to have a University in Ghana! Our goal is to complete the four story University building debt free. This will be the second Christian University in Ghana but the first in this sector of the country. We are 95% there but we still need close to $200,00 to be debt free. We need your help and for you to stand with us in this exciting project. The professors are ready and over 200 students have already expressed interest in enrolling.
